Small Boat Jibing Maneuver ( 78 sec Video)

The jibing maneuver is used when you change the direction of a boat by turning its stern, or back end of a boat, through the wind. The boom swings across the boat and the mainsail will then fill on the opposite side.

In a double-handed, or two-person, boat the duties are divided between the skipper and the crew. To jibe smoothly they need to be well coordinated. The skipper will alert the crew to get ready for jibing by saying, “"Prepare to Jibe". When the crew is prepared, he will respond by saying, “Ready.” As the skipper turns the boat and the boom starts to swing across the boat, the skipper will say, "Jibing!" or "Jibe-ho!"

The skipper steers the boat through the turn, ducks under the swinging boom, and moves to the opposite side of the boat, before the boom arrives on the contralateral side.

As the boom swings over, the crew lets out the jib sheet on one side, moves across the boat, and trims in the jib sheet on the other side.
