The pivot turn or back and fill maneuver
enables a boat to rotate in a tight channel. The steering wheel,
with a right hand prop, is turned to starboard throughout the maneuver.
The boat is placed in reverse allowing the prop-walk to swing the stern to
port and then in forward to allow prop-thrust to swing the bow to
starboard. This maneuver is repeated until the boat has turned to
the desired heading. The amount of thrust, if any, that is used will
depend upon the characteristics of boat and width of the channel.
When shifting between forward and reverse, pause in neutral to let the
prop to stop spinning, preventing any potential damage to the transmission. |
